Biography & Scholarship

Alyson Roy is an Associate Professor of Ancient History at the University of Idaho. Her research focuses on the Roman Republic, particularly visual culture. Her publications range from explorations of coins and conquest imagery in Iberia to the diffusion of visual stereotypes about Gallic peoples to the shifting economics of prestige and aristocratic competition in the late Republic. Her first monograph is entitled, Empire of Images: Visualizing the Conquered in the Roman Republic (De Gruyter 2024). Her current research topics include gendered discourse and imagery in the late Republic and early Empire and warrior imagery in the Republic. She teaches courses on Ancient Rome and Greece, as well as ancient mythology. She also supervises graduate fields in the Ancient Mediterranean, visual and material culture, empire and colonialism, cultural history, and gender and sexuality.
