Abstract
On March 1, 2025, President Trump signed Executive Order 14225, Immediate Expansion of American Timber Production directing the Bureau of Land Management and the US Forest Service to issue “new or updated guidance regarding tools to facilitate increased timber production and sound forest management, reduce time to deliver timber, and decrease timber supply uncertainty”. In a memo from the Chief of the US Forest Service providing guidance on implementing President Trump's executive order, Regional Foresters were directed to “explore the opportunity to designate Sustained Yield Units required for industry investments where active management is needed”. The Policy Analysis Group prepared this policy brief as a primer on the history of sustained yield unit policy and to consider how lessons learned from past implementation of the concept can inform current applications.
