Biography & Scholarship

Torrey Lawrence is Provost and Executive Vice President at the University of Idaho, a role he has held since December 2020, serving as the university's chief academic officer with responsibility for academic programs, statewide outreach, research initiatives, strategic planning, and accreditation. He previously served as Vice Provost for Faculty, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Faculty Affairs in the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences, and as Director and Associate Director of the Lionel Hampton School of Music, where he has been a faculty member since 1998 teaching tuba/euphonium, concert and athletic bands, and brass methods. An active performer, he has been principal tubist in the Walla Walla Symphony since 2002 and has appeared as a soloist and with ensembles including the Spokane, Oregon, and Eugene Symphonies, performing concerti by Vaughan Williams, Gregson, and Ewazen. Lawrence earned his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from Northwestern University and his Doctor of Musical Arts in tuba performance and wind conducting from the University of Oregon.
