Abstract
We examined whether undergraduates’ participation in recreational student groups, clubs, or organizations is associated with their leadership efficacy and motivation. Using a multi-institutional survey of 6,030 undergraduates, we constructed matched pairs of students who did and did not participate in a recreational student group, club, or organization using propensity score matching. The results suggest that participation in a recreational student group, club, or organization has significant and positive effects on students’ leadership efficacy and leadership motivation after controlling for the effects of pre-college, demographic, collegiate, and institutional variables.
