Abstract
After the 1984 Bhopal, India, industrial accident, people throughout the US became concerned that such a tragedy could happen in their areas. In response, Congress passed the Superfund Amendments & Reauthorization Act of 1986, of which Title III, the Emergency Planning & Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA), requires that citizens be informed about chemicals produced, used, transferred, and stored in their communities. As a central repository of information, libraries have an obligation to serve the public by providing access to EPCRA information; how they can best do so is explained, and available data bases (such as the EPA Toxic Release Inventory) are listed. Addresses and hotlines of key organizations are also given.
