Stakeholder engagement as a practice has been embraced by relatively few scientists who research FEWS systems. There are numerous benefits to engaging stakeholders, including improved quality of local management plans; effectiveness of solutions; fewer conflicts with and between stakeholders; improved quality of decisions; improved outcomes; and identification and implementation of solutions. Yet stakeholder engagement is often unsuccessful without careful consideration of how stakeholders are engaged. The contributions to this special issue illustrate best practices in engaging stakeholders in FEWS research by: discussing those engagement practices that were successful and those that were not; using stakeholders to assess and improve the engagement process; exploring collaborative learning with stakeholders, and; providing frameworks for successful engagement. The issue provides a robust suite of practices to improve stakeholder engagement in FEWS research.
