Abstract
Based on previously unknown newspaper items, this article reveals that on not one but two separate occasions Cormac McCarthy was hospitalized as a young man after being accidentally shot in the leg or legs—in one case, pulling the trigger himself. This biographical information helps flesh out the notable predominance in many of McCarthy’s novels of leg wounds, by bullet or other projectile, and subsequent painful treatment.
