Abstract
Sad Girl Ghost Stories is a collection of 26 flash and short fiction pieces. They are framed by, and told from, a collective group of unnamed Sad Girls. Drawing on folklore traditions, these stories are told in Abstract Style; they use a clipped tone, allusion to writers like Shirley Jackson, and reserved characters to enhance feelings of doubt in both the reader and the narrator. They pay close attention to sound and word choice, often working to enmesh the fluidity of both narrative and language. These works are floaty, unsteady, and shifting. Through these feminist ghost stories, this collection looks to consider themes of girlhood, motherhood, grief, transference, social expectations, and what it means to be haunted.
