Abstract
Littorology is the study of coastal zones, and it is a word I am making up for this artwork. To study coastal zones one must first think of the flow of the water and then the bodies that inhabit the littoral area. This thesis is an exploration of the coastal zones in Florida through its water, its storms, its people, and its fauna. The writing is creative nonfiction that engages principles of environmental, spiritual, somatic, and personal narrative writing. While using these writing style principles, this thesis also employs multiple forms and structures to explore the content that it is asking questions about and learning from. Themes of nature, mysticism, family, and personal pasts engage through the structures within each essay. Audiences interested in learning about Florida’s fauna or/and Jewish mysticism may be inclined to read this collection. Audiences interested in experiencing form and expectation subverting essays may also be inclined to read this collection. This project asks “what is a beginning and an end?” at the same time that it takes interests in determining a past, present, and future.
