Abstract

Dendrochronology FOS: Agriculture, forestry, and fisheries FOS: Earth and related environmental sciences FOS: Natural sciences Pinus ponderosa tree-ring
This dataset contains three RWL files of raw tree-ring measurements for the McCall and Bear Basin ponderosa pine tree-ring chronologies analyzed in “Dendrochronological evidence for snowpack induced growth limitation in Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) in central Idaho” published in Ecosphere in 2026. The “BearBasinRidge” chronology is a subset of the Bear Basin chronology containing the trees located on the ridgeline at that site. Tree cores in both of the chronologies were taken in May 2024, with the exception of the “MMM” cores in the McCall chronology, which were collected in March 2023. In the lab, all cores from both sites were dried and mounted with xylem oriented vertically and then progressively sanded to 400 grit on a belt sander and finished to 1000 grit by hand. Cores were scanned at 2400 dpi resolution in an Epson Expression 12000x flatbed scanner. The scans were then processed in CooRecorder version 9.8.1, a dendrochronological imaging and coordinate measuring software. Total-ring-width was measured to 0.001 mm. The resulting tree-ring series were then imported to CDendro 9.8.1 and XDateR/dplR to crossdate the series and check for dating errors due to missing rings or damage to the core. Each tree is represented by two cores, but two tree-ring series from McCall, MMM03A and MMM02A, were removed because of crossdating errors. Note that site meta-data is contained in the first 10 lines of each RWL file. See publication for more details.
