Abstract

Victor Molinari contributed in many ways to the field of long-term care research and how to improve the quality of nursing home care. This presentation will highlight his work with colleagues who evaluated the CARES® dementia care program developed by Health Care Interactive (Hobday, PI) and funded as an intervention study for CNAs and nurses in nursing homes by the National Institute on Aging (Grant #AG026210). Dr. Molinari helped to enhance this training program with his special interest in severe mental illness (SMI) and the care provided to residents living with SMI. He focused much of his research and instruction on promoting nonpharmacological approaches to care for nursing home residents with dementia or SMI, inspiring students to develop their own research on SMI among older adults. This aspect of his work will be highlighted in addition to his work as a clinical geropsychologist who encouraged the use of health promotion activities to increase the quality of life for long-term care residents.
