Abstract
Since July 2025, University of Idaho Special Collections and Archives has
received dozens of patron requests for documentary support related to
federal Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) claims. Proof of
residence in Idaho during 1951-1962 can help claimants pursue federal
compensation; the U of I’
s substantial phone book and city directory
collection can help establish such proof. This panel examines our
experience responding to these requests through three points of focus:
our directory collections, our evolving reference practices, and
implications of this case for future documentation needs. Attendees will
gain practical knowledge for handling similar requests and will be
prompted to consider retention and digitization priorities for sources of
directory information.
