Abstract

Multiterminal high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power systems help the transmission of bulk power across long distances and can interconnect asynchronous AC systems as well as systems with different frequencies. Through their ability to control power flow rapidly and precisely, HVDC systems can improve the resilience of the overall power system. Most line-commutated converter (LCC) HVDC systems utilize point-to-point connections, with a few implementing either series or parallel multiterminal configurations. Since HVDC system controls rely heavily on measurements and communication-based operations, it is important to design the system to be resilient against grid disturbances as well as cyber-events. The work presented here develops and analyzes a calculation-based controls methodology to identify and counter malicious false data injection of measurements used for control inputs to the main HVDC power sources by producing corrected values for the control scheme. The scheme is demonstrated on a simulated series connected multiterminal HVDC system.
