Abstract
In recent years, educational leaders in both the UK and US have faced mounting stakeholder pressure over a wide array of issues, from COVID-related school closures (Heffernan et al., 2022) to demands around curriculum and equity (UNESCO, 2022), often tied to broader debates over social progress (Khalifa et al., 2016) and organizational accountability (Banwo et al., 2022). This empirical qualitative study stems from a broader project examining the decision-making experiences of 20 educational leaders managing stakeholder pushback on socially contentious issues that can elicit public backlash. This paper focuses specifically on emerging findings that merit deeper attention. It explores how educational leaders in the US and UK interpret and respond to stakeholder backlash over socially contentious issues, with an emphasis on comparative decision-making shaped by differing political, institutional, and policy contexts.
