Abstract
In the United States, farmers’ markets, CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) and backyard gardening have become increasingly important ways for people to access food. In Ukraine, small-scale food cultivation gained popularity during World War II and became even more commonplace as the country experienced dramatic social and economic changes in the 1990s. With household gardening’s resurgence in a variety of places like these, we wanted to understand the purpose and meaning motivating people’s, and particularly women’s, participation.
