Abstract
This chapter reviews critical perspectives into interculturality in tourism. It first establishes the importance of critical interculturality for tourism research and notes the epistemological incompatibility in different approaches to interculturality in Tourism Studies and Intercultural Communication. Then, drawing upon research in sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and critical tourism studies, the chapter reviews four main perspectives into critical interculturality in tourism communication: interculturality as intersubjective positioning; meta-discourses of interculturality; materiality of interculturality; and posthumanism and interculturality. Based on the review, the chapter argues that critical perspectives into interculturality and interdisciplinary dialogues are important for future interculturality research, especially in relation to issues of wider societal concerns, such as conflicts, inequality, and sustainability in tourism.
