Abstract
Aphids comprise a large, ubiquitous, and cosmopolitan group of species, many of which are important pests of crop plants. They have several unique biological attributes and are characterized for their very rapid population growth. In potato, most aphid damage is due to the transmission of pathogens such as Potato leafroll virus (PLRV) and Potato virus Y (PVY). Fourteen aphid species are known to colonize potato, while numerous other species contribute to non-persistent transmission of PVY. Colonizing aphids and PLRV that they transmit can be currently controlled by insecticides, although resistance and resurgence are an ongoing threat. PVY, however, requires a more integrated approach to its management due to complex dynamics of its outbreaks in potato fields.
