Abstract
In this chapter, authors discuss before-, during-, and after-reading strategies related to the topics of consent and sexual assault presented in Kelly Yang's novel Parachutes. Teacher sensitivity, content forecasting for students, and key term definitions are described. Activities outlined include recognizing the signs of healthy relationships, drawing boundaries, and conducting research to situate consent in social and legislative contexts. Finally, authors suggest social action projects as a way to scaffold students' agency in response to issues such as microaggressions, stereotyping, and cultural awareness that arise from reading and discussion, allowing students to make a difference in their own worlds.
